I always had a hunch that there was a connection between Ernst’s paintings and the Isis as it’s presented in the British Museum. I also have always had a hunch that disembodiment in 19th-20th century European art had to do with the revival of archaic, decayed, disembodied sculptures, particularly from the Parthenon. Is it too much to imagine that Ernst would have studied the Elgian Marbles from the British Museum and that maybe their decayed aesthetic inspired him?
